The Living Bread

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”(John 6:35)

living bread

Jesus said this following the feeding of 5 thousand people with only 5 loaves and two fish. It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite! (v 7)  The people were so amazed at this miraculous sign that they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” (v 14). They wanted to make him king and so Jesus withdrew from them to the mountain. They found him the next day on the other side of the river and when they enquired how he go there, he told them that they were only looking for him because they ate and were filled ( v 26).

“Do not work for food that spoil but food that endures to eternal life which the Son of man will give you”  He says in verse 27. “What must we do to do what God requires?”  They asked. “Believe in the one that sent me” says Jesus in verses 28- 29. They wanted more miraculous sign in order to believe… They were not satisfied with the 5 loaves and 2 fish.  So they reminded Jesus of how God rained down manna from heaven. “Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” (v 31)

But Jesus told them “I am the bread of life that came down from heaven.” (v41). I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever…” (v51)

Previously we talked about Jesus wanting to give us peace not like the world give. There is no real peace apart from that which is found in Christ Jesus – the way the truth and the Life.

Jesus wants us to partake of the real bread – the bread from heaven. The bread you get every week from Knead Bakery, as good as it taste, it cannot give you eternal life. It only fills you up for a while and then you need to eat again. The bread Jesus wants to give you is the living bread.  This bread says Jesus, is my flesh which I give for the life of the world (v 50). Once you eat it you will never go hungry. Once you believe in Him you will never go thirsty.

Here at Bread4Life you not only have the opportunity to partake of the physical bread but to experience the living bread.  So as you eat, as you enjoy the physical bread today courtesy of Knead, think of the living bread that Jesus promised you – bread so that you may have life in him – life abundant, life eternal.
