This morning while wishing Mom
Happy Birthday on the phone,
Daniel put the newspaper on the kitchen table
and I saw your face and I knew you were gone

I take a breath and think straight away that
it was 27 years
for my “all white” education,
for my “all American” upbringing
of safe suburbs, proms and tennis clubs
you all paid with pass books, maids’ rooms, homelands,
“white only” beaches and benches and buses

we cannot refund you
and we are not worthy to sit at your table
so in your memory
let’s be
forgivers and peacemakers and justice seekers
all the days of our lives.
